The hourglass figure is a classic…and the most asked for pose! It has stood the test of time better than any other look for good reason…it’s sexy as all hell and pretty healthy too!
Some are born with it, some can build it and some will always be long and lean as much as they try. The science behind it all basically comes down to genetics so when you next see her, kick Grandma in the shins!
No matter which category you fall into there is always something that can be done…It might not turn you into Marilyn Monroe but we’ve already had one of her anyway. The world might still be waiting for the super sexy, confident version of you!
So…what exercises can we do to build or enhance your hourglass shape???
THE HIPS/BUTT - “I’ve got no arse! It’s flat! It’s small! How do I get some shape in it?”…If I had a dollar!!!
The answer is two key exercises: Squats and Lunges (and all 100,000,000 variations of them!) They work the front and backs of your thighs and your butt all together. This is what creates that “hippy” look you see in women like Halle Berry!
Sidenote: A full squat is butt to ground . It will be hard to start but as you get better go lower…A great philosopher once said “shorty got low”…and Flo Rida was right…Shorty will get low…but it’s not a race. Slow and steady progress!
THE WAIST (essential part of the hourglass figure): Depending on your body shape, you may not need to do much but from a muscular stand point the “core” of your body is really similar to a corset as seen in the above photo of (mega babe) Sophia Loren.
The muscles all pull inwards towards one another drawing everything in with them so if you want a a built in corset anything to do with core strength is going to help!
The gold standard for core strength is and probably always will be planks! But there are ways of easing into them and changing them up to make the a bit less URGH!
Lower back pain? Your core is probably weak…go back to the easiest level, take your time and it should get easier!
Next step to achieving the hourglass figure…
THE BOOBS: Sadly there’s no exercise that will make you go from a B to a DD…if there was a guy would have discovered it by now for sure! However, there are a few ways to “perk” things up. Building a bit of chest muscle size will obviously push your breasts up and out so the classic push-up can be a winner. Alternatively in a gym there are a multitude of exercises that can be done…far too many to list!
Conversely what is happening in your back can be equally important. If your back is weak you might have rounded shoulders given the appearance of a smaller bust. This can also squash your waist down a bit too! Strengthen the back, open up the shoulders and push “the girls” up there for the world to see!

During our session, I like to keep things fun and relaxed, as that’s when we get the best, most natural smiles out of everyone! About a week or so prior to your session, I’ll send you the link to the pre-session questionnaire, which will help us both sort out our thoughts and ideas about what we hope to do during our time together! My goal is to capture the true personalities of your children and families, which means I’ll take a little time at the beginning of the session to get to know you and your kiddos. Family picture day should not be a stressful occasion, and I do everything I can to make it enjoyable for everyone, even Dad! ;)
As the oldest of 5 and God-mother to numerous young ones, I understand that kids don’t always cooperate and do what we want them to do! I like to give kids a little bit of control during a session, letting them make some choices about poses/props, as this tends to make them more excited about participating in the pictures. I love to capture kids being kids, so feel free to bring along a favorite toy or lovey. And expect to laugh a lot (at me) because I tend to do lots of silly things to get my little friends to smile ~ I want these kids to have fun! Also, expect to take a snack break or two during the session just to give the little ones a break and recharge their batteries. However, please remember that tired and/or sick kids just want to be home and not getting their picture taken, so please try to avoid scheduling your session during nap time. And, if your child is sick, please call me to reschedule ~ we want to make the most of our time together and I promise we will work it out!
Most full sessions take about an hour to an hour and a half, and you can expect to get a mixture of posed and candid images. Sessions with extended family members will take a bit longer. After your session is over, I know you will be dying to see the pictures, and trust me ~ I can’t wait to edit them! I spend quite a bit of time going through and only selecting the images that I think are both the highest quality I can provide you and are memories I would want captured on film! My goal is to have your images completed within 2 weeks of your session, if not sooner. I will also post a sneak peek album on Facebook for you to share with all of your friends and family if you’d like!
Please let me know if you have any questions regarding your session ~ I want your picture day to be fun, relaxed and stress free! Can’t wait to see you!
1. What is Boudoir Photography?
Boudoir means your intimate space. Ya know…like a bedroom or dressing room. Boudoir Photography showcases you beautifully in this light. My Boudoir Photography aims to show the essence of you, the beauty of your womanhood, and all that you empower.
2. What is a “Boudoir Marathon”?
A Boudoir Marathon is a way to get Boudoir Photography at a lower cost. The premise is that since I’m doing several shoots in one location, on one day I can pass on savings to you. Your shoot time is shorter than a regular Boudoir Shoot, and you don’t get to choose your location. I am able to offer these at a reduced rate because I’m booking several in one day. Of course it’s not quite the same as a regular boudoir shoot but it’s pretty darn close.
3. What is included in the Boudoir Marathon Fee?
The Boudoir Marathon includes 45 minutes of shooting time with me, Hair and Makeup, and a Little Black Book. You want more? You can upgrade and purchase other things.
4. What should I wear?
Wear whatever makes you comfortable. I know that some may be a bit more modest than others. That is no problem at all. Feel free to wear a cute bra and panty set under your love’s button up shirt. A little more daring? Wear a nice little teddy, a hot bra and panty set, some thigh highs with a garter belt, or even that cheerleader’s outfit you have hidden away. Don’t worry…I won’t tell. But really, wear whatever makes you feel good. It might even be a ball gown. I can help you make anything sexy! If you feel good then you’ll look good and love your photos. If you have ideas and want some help then just let me know. I can point you in the right direction…or even go shopping with you! I like to suggest you bring a white and a black bra and panty set as well just in case.
5. How many outfits do I get to wear?
Marathon spots are 45 minutes each. This will most likely cover 2 outfits, but if you are relaxed really quickly and can change fast then you may be able to do more. The key here is that you’ll have 45 minutes to use as you wish with whatever outfits we can fit in that time frame.
6. Do I have to bare all?
You can wear as much or as little as you want. You can wear a tank and jeans if you want. The goal is to make you sexy, not necessarily naked. I
want you to be comfortable first and foremost.
7. What will this be like?
It will be tons of fun of course! I must say that every Boudoir client has said that this experience was more fun than they’d ever expected. You can expect to show up about an hour before your shoot time for your hair and makeup. I’ll also have some refreshments for you. You’ll be in an area where you can bring a friend and you’ll most likely meet the people shooting ahead of you and after you. You still have clothes on though so don’t worry about anyone seeing you in your skivvies. After hair and makeup is done I’ll bring you into the shooting room. I’ll leave you there for a few minutes so you can change and get ready. Then, I’ll come in and we’ll start shooting. I know you’ll probably be a little nervous at first, but that’s okay. You’ll warm up and I’ll help you look fabulous. After your time is up, I’ll leave you to change back into your clothes. If you came with friends then you’re welcome to stay and wait. If you made friends while waiting to shoot then you can still stay and wait. It’s totally up to you.
8. Who will be in the room with us?
In the shooting room it will be just you and me. If you would feel more comfortable with a friend then that’s fine but you’ll probably be able to relax more with just the two of us. The hair and makeup area will be where arriving participants will wait. You might be able to mingle with the others participating. No worries about modesty though. You’re fully clothed at this point and you are free to change in privacy and no one has to see what you’re wearing but me.
9. What are the prices?
The fee for a marathon spot is $250 and comes with our Little Black Book. You will also have the opportunity to purchase additional prints or products. Prints start at $30.
10. How do I book my spot?
That’s easy. Just visit our booking page at http://portraitcouturebyshana.com/contact-us/. You can pay right there. You can also email me or call if you have any other questions.
11. What happens if I refer people?
For every person that books based on your referral you get $25 in credit. You can use that towards your session fee, prints or products. Refer 5 people and get half off your marathon fee (or $125 in credit). Just have them let me know you sent them and you’re good to go.
12. When do I get to see my photos?
It will take about 2 weeks to get your images processed. At that point I’ll post them to a completely private online gallery. You can pick your favorites and make orders if you wish. I’ll put a few of your favorites into the Little Black Book and then it will be sent to you. That’s it! Pretty easy right?
Let’s all give it up for one of the sweetest couples in the world: Brooke Mullins and Aaron Morris!!!
Brooke told me all about how Aaron and her met. They were both 16, and Juniors at their High School where they met before falling madly in love!
She also filled me in on the proposal. Aaron proposed at the Rain Forest Café in the Opry Mills Mall here in Nashville, TN. It was Brooke’s first time there. It was also her last day of classes during her last semester in College. She thought it was just to celebrate the beginning of summer! Boy, was she wrong. Haha. Of course, she said Y-E-S!
Their wedding date is set for June 28, 2014. They will be getting married at the beautiful A Country Chapel in Adams, TN, and their reception will be at the War Memorial Building in Hopkinsville, KY. I’ll also be photographing their Wedding and I CAN’T WAIT!!! Her flowers of choice are Sunflowers. :D How sexy is that?! They’re not just excited about the details, though. They’re also excited to spend the rest of their lives together. It’s so clear that this couple is head-over-heels for each other!
You’ll see what I mean when you see the rest of these FANTASTIC photos. Until next time readers!
